Pirelli is ready to return to the track after a short summer break for the second seasonal double-header of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship that will start with round four of the Calendar, on the Spanish track of MotorLand Aragón, from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th August 2020.
Also for this event, as already happened in the previous rounds in Portugal and Spain, Pirelli has decided for the WorldSBK class to combine the most popular standard solutions with numerous development solutions previously used and appreciated by the riders. In the WorldSSP class, on the other hand, only standard solutions will be present, ie tyres already on sale on the market.
The Spanish MotorLand Aragón circuit has historically rather aggressive asphalt, especially harsh towards the rear tyres; in fact, the surface has a rather pronounced roughness that could cause tyre wear problems. In addition, the sand that is sometimes carried by the wind and deposited on the asphalt can cause loss of grip and drifts towards the centre of the corners.
This explains why, for the rear, Pirelli has opted for both soft and medium solutions, the latter being useful especially in the event of low temperatures and in the first sessions if the surface is particularly dirty.
The front tyres, in addition to the wear caused by the aggressiveness of the asphalt, are also called to withstand violent braking at the end of the straight opposite the pits and the steep slopes, which cause high loading on the front end. Also notable the fast corners and multiple changes of direction, where a good level of precision and grip on the surface is required.
The solutions for the WorldSBK and WorldSSP classes:
In the WorldSBK class, all riders will have available three front solutions and four rear solutions, both standard tyres on top of several development solutions already used by the riders.
For the front tyre, the three available solutions are made of two standard options and one development option. The standard SC1 represents the most successful tyre during the last round, while the standard SC2 is an evolution of the development SC2 X1071, used during the course of last year. The medium development solution SC2 X1118 will also be available, being more stable than the standard SC2, so could be the ideal solution for riders with a more aggressive riding style.
As for the rear tyre, the riders have four options at their disposal. The first is the super soft standard SCX, successfully used in previous rounds in preparation for the qualifying lap, but also both in short and full races. The second option, the soft standard SC0, is joined by the soft development solution SC0 Y0446, which has a more high performing compound, ideal in the event of particularly high asphalt temperatures. The last option consists of the medium development solution SC1 Y0966, which has a softer compound than the standard SC1 and could be the ideal solution in case of particularly dirty asphalt conditions.
The last rear option is represented by the Superpole tyre which will allow the riders to make a quick lap during the Superpole session in search of the absolute best time to position themselves on the starting grid.
In the WorldSSP category, on the other hand, there will be four dry solutions available to the riders, two for the front and as many for the rear, all exclusively standard solutions. For the front, riders will have a standard soft SC1 compound and a medium SC2 compound, which allows for more wear resistance than the first. As for the rear, the riders will have at their disposal a standard SC0 soft compound, further improved to offer maximum performance, and a medium standard SC1 compound, designed to offer the right compromise between high, constant performance and limited wear.
As always, in case of bad weather, riders of all classes will have rain and intermediate tyres available.
